1. Transportation

There are a number of ways to reach Johor using ground-based public transportation, with the causeway from Singapore to Malaysia providing one of the most popular routes into the state. There are regular bus services from Singapore to Johor Bahru. Visitors are obliged to alight at the border for immigration purposes; passengers can re-connect with their bus beyond the immigration post. Visitors travelling from Singapore to Johor Bahru by train must also disembark at the border for immigration purposes.

From other parts of Malaysia, buses provide connections with Johor with a number of long distance services in operation. All services terminate at the Larkin Bus Terminal, which is situated about four kilometres north of the Malaysia-Singapore causeway. Regular services operated by a number of different companies are available from Kuala Lumpur.

The Kotaraya Bus Station of Johor is one of the famous hubs of transportation in Johor where several public conveyances line up and solicit travelers to board them. Buses at the Kotaraya Bus Station of Johor generally cover long distance routes across expressways and even carry passengers from the artistic terrains of Johor to Singapore. The Kotaraya Bus Station of Johor is housed at a vantage spot in Johor in the vicinity of several eateries and shopping plazas of Johor and is one of the key centers of transportation in Johor.

Kotaraya is famed for being an excellent Cab Station too. The cabbies of Johor are wise and have selected the Kotaraya region as one of their chief Cab Stations because Kotaraya lies in close proximity to the Senai International Airport. Tourists who land at the Airport hop into the cabs to go places around Johor for the completion of their corporate assignments or just for the sake of traveling in Johor. However, it is best to roam the precincts of this lovely holiday destination in buses because they are far less costly than taxis. This is a fact that you will discover if you compare the prices charged by the diverse modes of transportation in Johor.

Ports

Johor has three ports, the Pasir Gudang Port, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and the Tanjung Langsat Port.

Airports

Johor has one international airport (30 km away from JB city centre), The Sultan Ismail International Airport in Senai (01’38’26’ N, 103’40’13’ E). It was opened on 6 June 1974 and has been expanded several times since. Currently, it has a 5-million passenger capacity, with a parallel taxiway under construction.

The airport is a regional hub of AirAsia, a regional low-cost no-frills airline. Malaysia Airlines also operate flights from Senai airport to some local and international destinations.

The majority of flights arriving at the airport are domestic and are provided by Malaysia Airlines. Domestic destinations served include Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. AirAsia operates flights from Macau and Palembang, while its Indonesian offshoot provides connections with Jakarta.

There are coach services, shuttle buses, public buses and airport taxis available to transport visitors between the airport and downtown Johor Bahru. Rental cars are also available for those visitors preferring to make their own way to their onward destination.

2. Suggestion

PASIR GUDANG: An integrated transportation hub would be built in Bandar Seri Alam township here to serve residents in the Eastern Gate Development Zone.

Seri Alam Properties Sdn Bhd acting head of subsidiary Frankie Tan Kiat How said a 3.19ha site near to a private medical centre has been slated for the project.

“The hub will be developed within the next two years and it will improve connectivity from the Eastern Gate to other parts of Iskandar Malaysia,’’ he told StarMetro.

Tan said this after hosting an appreciation lunch for members of Johor Baru media and the company’s corporate clients at Amansari Residences and Resorts.

He added that the hub would encompass train commuter, feeder bus and taxi services with the commuter system to be inter linked with the rail network at the Kempas Sentral.

The latter is part of the KTM Kempas Baru station which would be developed into an integrated transportation hub for Iskandar Malaysia, similar to KL Sentral, but several times bigger.

Eastern Development Gate is one of the five flagship development zones in Iskandar Malaysia – others are the Johor Baru City Centre, Nusajaya, Western Development Gate and Kulai-Senai.

Areas that come under the Eastern Development Gate are Pasir Gudang, Pasir Gudang Port, Pasir Gudang industrial park, Tanjung Langsat Port and Tanjung Langsat industrial complex.

“There is a possibility of a link-up with the Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit system with the transportation hub which will extend from Singapore to Pasir Gudang,’’ said Tan.

2) KUALA LUMPUR: A plan to build a 500km mass rapid transit (MRT) system has been proposed to improve the connectivity within Iskandar Malaysia, according to Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) chief executive Ismail Ibrahim.

“The MRT project will be developed in five or six phases. The first phase is expected to be completed by 2020. The announcement will be made by the Prime Minister if the proposal is accepted,” he said at the Invest Malaysia 2011 yesterday.

He said IRDA planned to build a bus rapid transit (BRT) first and expanded to MRT after that. However, it is still in the planning stage.

3) Urban Public Transport (UPT) NKRA aims to raise the modal share to 13% in 2010 and to 25% by 2012 during the morning peak hours of 7am – 9am in Klang Valley, followed by separate plans to also improve public transport in Johor Bahru and Penang.

4) The Southern Integrated Gateway refers to a complex in Johor Bahru, Malaysia incorporating the city's main railway station, JB Sentral, and a customs, immigration, and quarantine complex (CIQ), the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex or Sultan Iskandar Complex, named after Sultan Iskandar of Johor.

The station and complex are the main transportation hub of Johor Bahru and southernPeninsular Malaysia. The Malaysian Public Works Department was responsible for the design and construction of the project; Gerbang Perdana Sdn Bhd was the main contractor. This project is part of the Iskandar Malaysia development corridor project.

The CIQ complex was opened to vehicular traffic on 16 December 2008. As of October 2010, the JB Sentral railway station entered operation and service to the old Johor Bahru railway station ceased.
